White House Rural Council Event Part of Obama Administration Efforts to Support Rural Businesses and Grow Rural Economies

PORTLAND - On Thursday, August 28, 2014, U.S. Small Business Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet will keynote the fifth and final regional White House Rural Council's "Made In Rural America Regional Forum" at the Abernethy Center in Oregon City. She will promote investment and export opportunities for rural small businesses and entrepreneurs. This forum is a cornerstone of the Administration's "Made in Rural America" Export and Investment Initiative as well as part of President Obama's broad commitment to supporting economic growth and job creation in rural communities.

Under the Obama Administration, American businesses have driven record exports for four consecutive years, reaching $2.3 trillion in 2013. Export activities support 11.3 million American jobs. In Oregon, more than 5,000 companies are exporting on an annual basis – and 90 percent of those firms are small and medium-size businesses.

The SBA is committed to unlocking the potential of rural businesses. SBA Rural Business Loans provide capital access to the Middle Class and Rural America. Rural small business growth is important as half of the people who work in America either own or work for a small business, and two out of three new private sector jobs are created by small businesses, many located in rural areas.

This event is hosted by the National Association of Counties and Clackamas County, with support from the White House Domestic Policy Council, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Commerce, Export-Import Bank, Oregon Business Development Department, and the Western United States Agricultural Trade Association.
